Bears of Katmai July 7 - 13, 2023
A perennial favorite on my schedule, the Bears of Katmai Workshop take us from Anchorage to Brooks Falls in Katmai Natoinal Park, and on to three days in Homer where we enjoy the saltwater vibe take a boat onto Kachemak Bay to check out the local wildlife, and then make a bush flight to the coast of Lake Clark National Park where we find even more bears clamming on the mud flats or grazing sedge meadows.
On this first trip of 2023, all went to plan until our day to make the flight to Lake Clark. Fog rolled in, and the planes couldn’t fly. Fortunately, I was able to make a few calls, and arrange a backup plan. On our final day of the trip, on our way back to Anchorage, we detoured to a flight service in Soldotna, boarded a float plane, and headed off to a lake on the border of Lake Clark National Park. There we found abundant bears fishing for Sockeye Salmon. We were photographing from a boat which gave a great, low perspective on the action. For me, this was the photographic highlight of the trip!
