Autumn in the Brooks Range - 20 - 24 August, 2023
If I were pressed to pick one, the Brooks Range would probably fall at the top of my favorite places in Alaska. In the autumn, that reasoning is clear as the colors erupt into the tundra and forest. This year, autumn across Alaska was coming about a week to ten days later than normal, which meant it felt more like late summer than fall around our base in Wiseman. However, each day as we were there, the colors shifted more and more toward autumn, allowing us front-row seats to the changing season.
We experienced all the weather the Brooks Range offers. From moody low clouds to rain, to rainbows, and one bluebird day. We ventured far north mid-way through the trip, driving as far as the northern mountainfront, where the Arctic coastal plain swept out in front of us in rolling hills of colorful tundra. We hiked up rushing streams, and made the trek through the woods to one of my favorite viewpoints in the central Brooks Range. Amazing how much beauty we can pack into a short trip!
