I’ve recently returned from Brazil’s Pantanal. This is an area I’ve wanted to visit for many years, and the experience exceeded my expectations. My group and I spent time at three different lodges, but dedicated the bulk of our efforts to chasing jaguars through the most frequented part of the Pantanal near Porto Jofre. This area is not a hidden secret, but it is the best and probably only place in the world where Jaguars can be consistently seen and photographed. And it WAS incredible.

Over our 5 nights in the Porto Jofre area, making morning and afternoon boat trips deeper into the river system, my group and I saw and photographed 22 different Jaguars. While I knew seeing them was likely, I had no idea how frequently, and in how many different situations we would see them. The photography was remarkable – jaguars hunting, in trees (a rare thing), napping, resting, exploring, patrolling, mating, and interacting with one another. Every day was different.

But it wasn’t just Jaguars. My favorite moment may actually have been an hour we spent watching a pack of Giant River Otters devour several large eels. Otter pups were scrambling about, looking for a bite while the adults chowed down on the slithering fish. It was weird and wonderful.

And then the birds! Birds everywhere. Macaws, parrots, waders, songbirds, currasows, guans, storks, and the list goes on. There was something to photograph everywhere we looked.

For those who have made photo safaris, you’ll find this trip has a very similar to feel to a journey in Africa. Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to experience the New World Tropics, if so, I’m not sure I can think of a more rewarding trip. Just check out the gallery below.

And once you’ve done that, consider joining me in 2025! The trip is available for signups now! Check it out HERE.
